Biliary atresia: A rare condition in newborn
















BILIARY ATRESIA, a rare condition found in newborn infants, is often mistaken with jaundice. The disorder is usually found in one baby out of 10,000 to 20,000 babies in the United States ie, on average, out of 15,000 live births one baby is affected by biliary atresia.

This is a condition which is neither hereditary nor contagious nor preventable. The only cure is surgery or if the atresia is complete (ie, 72 per cent) then the patient is left only with the option of liver transplantation. Biliary atresia occurs when the common bile duct between liver and small intestine is blocked or absent.
